Welcome to the Hornsby Men's Shed

We aim to attract both male and female members who have a common interest in working with wood. Our members gain and improve woodworking skills through the free exchange of knowledge and assistance. Members work on their own projects or help charities by making toys, furniture and nesting boxes.

This is the thinnest dressed wood that is practical, and readily available, for platter turning. Often this thickness is available in 300 mm (or greater) widths meaning that a 300 mm blank etc can be […]

Selecting and Drying Turning Woods

By Greg Croker Regarding the selection of wood for turning there is mostly no choice as the tree to be felled is selected for a non-turning requirement or has blown over during a storm etc. Which are the better species of trees to select? In our area eucalyptus trees are predominant with the acacias next? […]

A Job Well Done

What Our Members Say

The shed has been a life line especially after my wife died. It has been an opportunity to continue to use my engineering skills and enjoy the camaraderie of the group. Tony B.

The opportunity to make a small difference and help others with their woodturning and at the same time enjoy their company is priceless. John M.

Enjoyable for the soul as well as the body. Good to talk about common interests with like-minded men. Greg C.

The HWMS is the friendliest and most efficiently operated organisation with which I have been associated, with a number of members voluntarily offering their time and expertise to ensure this continues. Despite the complexity of the workshop it operates smoothly - repairs and maintenance of machines and tools is prompt and a programme of replacement and upgrading is apparent. From a personal viewpoint the Shed provides an important social venue for me and I never cease to be amazed at the imagination and skill displayed by members with their projects and their willingness to share these. I trust the Shed can continue to operate as efficiently and effectively for years to come. Jim K.
