Activities

Toymaking

Our Shed’s primary activity is making toys which we donate in large numbers to the Salvation Army and the Wesley Mission for distribution at Christmas time to disadvantaged children in the Sydney region and beyond.

Our toymaking production commences early in the new year and continues for ten months up until we proudly hand over more than 400 toys in November each year.

Members take great pleasure in making a vast array of wooden toys for children at Christmas time.

For boys we typically make wooden trucks, trains, bikes, cars and even mini service stations.

For girls we typically make doll’s cradles, jewellery boxes and table and chair sets.

In 2023 we began donating selected wooden toys to the LifeLine shops at Pennant Hills and Waitara to help raise funds for their national crisis support and suicide prevention services.

Woodcraft

Our output in the area known as woodcraft comes from a number of woodworking activities.

Woodcraft production includes a diverse range of services that we provide to the local community:

  • Possum boxes – more than 200 are made each year for wildlife organisations.
  • Native Beehives – mostly made for orchardists and plantations.
  • Member’s projects – wooden items for their own homes.

The revenues we receive from our woodcraft activities all go to fund the materials we need to produce the huge number of toys we make each year for distribution by our charities.

Woodturning

Our Shed membership has a sub-group of very dedicated woodturners known as the Hornsby District Woodturners Club which has been operational for 40 years.

Our woodturning production operates all year and includes a diverse range of goods that we provide to community organisations:

  • Wooden bowls mainly for household use in the kitchen.
  • Wooden stands – mainly for household use in a variety of applications.
  • Inlaid wooden pens – more than 60 made each year for distribution by our charities.
  • Wooden race cars – more than 40 made each year for distribution by our charities.

The revenues we receive from our woodturning activities all go to fund the materials we need to produce the huge number of toys we make each year for distribution by our charities.
